My mother often played doubles with her brother, Dwight, pictured here in the far court, when she wasn’t playing with some of her many beaux. The unusual fence was probably made of cedar saplings, more rot resistant than pine. Even so, by the time I came along, this fence had been replaced by a utilitarian all-weather cyclone fence, maintenance-free. Sadly, the wonderful scent of cedar no longer filled the tennis court.
